How To Prepare For IELTS?

10 Key Strategies For Candidates Preparing For The IELTS Exam

If you are preparing for IELTS, it is very important for you to strategise well. You need to work efficiently to get the best score possible and you can do this by following the acronym “I.E.L.T.S. S.T.U.D.Y.”. These 10 strategies will ensure that you know how to prepare for IELTS, like a pro.

I” – Intention

When preparing for the IELTS exam, remember that for many it is a large investment of effort and time. It may also potentially require classes or materials to be purchased. Whilst there are candidates with high-level English skills that pass with relative ease, for others, they should realise it is more a mountain, than a small hill, to summit.

E” – Expectation

Try to understand as much as possible about the exam. Through finding out about the structure of the IELTS exam, you can focus on the tasks that will be given, rather than being surprised in the exam and having to spend time working out the process that is involved instead of answering the question.

L” – Lessons

For some candidates, with a high-level of English, IELTS lessons or even any preparation might not be completely necessary. However, bear in mind that even native speakers might find getting an exceptionally high grade for the IELTS challenging. Therefore, hiring an IELTS tutor could be highly beneficial.

T” – Testing

Keep testing yourself so that you are aware of your current level and where you need to get to. This is where having an IELTS tutor can be extremely useful – for the speaking and writing sections.

S” – Schedule

It is essential to properly schedule time for IELTS homework and classes. Usually, closer to the exam date there is not enough time to improve sufficiently.

S” – School

Taking the IELTS exam may feel a bit like “going back to school”. However, don’t forget that you can use skills you have picked up since, to facilitate your IELTS study through better planning, etc…

T” – Target

You must understand fully the goal you are aiming towards with your IELTS exam study. Ensure that you find the grade requirements from the organisation(s) that you are dealing with – for instance, you may need 7.5 average and 7 each section for the IELTS Academic exam, to work in the UK as a doctor.

U” – Utilise

Try to utilise as many resources as possible because there is a huge amount of information available online and in libraries. An IELTS teacher should be able to give some guidance on how to prepare for IELTS in this regard.
