I believe my role as a tutor is to provide my students with individual assistance and support with their problems, and equally importantly, to try and ignite their interest in studying. I try and engage my students, to stimulate them, while still making them feel comfortable around me. It is essential that students not only get good grades, but also understand concepts, learn to think mathematically and solve problems themselves.

Rather than just showing them how to solve problems, I encourage students to think and work through things themselves, while only gently prodding them in the right direction. This tends to greatly enhance their knowledge and self-confidence, and many are surprised at how well they do.

I have recently retired from a Senior lectureship position (associate professorship) after 45 years at University College London. I was a senior lecturer in Biochemistry, enzymology, biotechnology, molecular biology and medical biochemistry. I was a degree programme tutor for many years and was an admissions tutor for the last 27 years of my career. I have vast experience of the entire UCAS process in my capacity as admissions tutor and have spoken publicly on numerous occasions at schools and colleges. I have critically read more than 20,000 UCAS forms and advised many students on personal statement writing, careers, higher education, medical applications and degree programme applications. I spent 35 years as a cancer research and enzymology research scientist, publishing papers and patents throughout my career, supervised PhD students and undergraduate students through complex research projects and acted as a mentor to thousands of students. Whilst my skill set is mainly in the biosciences, I have much experience of natural sciences, medicine and biochemical engineering but have a generic feel for writing and reading UCAS forms. I was personally involved in interviewing thousands of undergraduate students for university places and so know the stresses of these processes on young people. I have also been on medical interview panels and carried out numerous mock interviews with students applying for medicine at undergraduate and graduate level. I have been involved in curriculum design both at UCL and for AQA as an expert on the biological sciences A2 curriculum (current curriculum). In my former role as outreach and admissions lead in the biosciences at UCL I have spoken to many parents and applicants about the university environment, applications and the whole experience of university life and have been actively involved with young people from disadvantaged backgrounds in my outreach activities.

I have a wealth of experience in the whole process of thinking about, applying, coping and succeeding in higher education. As a personal tutor it was my role to look after the well-being, both academically and pastorally of my students. I am a student-friendly and affable person who strongly believes that any young person given the right help can be succesful.

I come from the Welsh coast, Pembrokeshire and speak fluent English, French, Welsh and Spanish. I love languages and believe that being able to communicate with people from around the world is a vital thing. I really enjoy working with people & am an excellent communicator. I am a friendly, patient, fun and innovative tutor & believe that everyone has the ability to learn a language with the right tutor if they set their mind to it. When teaching, I believe in approaching languages like an instrument, that the following should be worked equally; grammar, listening, reading, speaking and writing. I like to guide/teach the lessons mostly in the language being taught, as people tend to progress more rapidly this way. I cater towards the individual level of each client.

I have travelled a lot, improving my language skills along the way. I believe that being able to communicate & work with people from all sorts of cultures & languages is a vital skill in this global world today. My hobbies include yoga, dance, swimming, surfing, languages, cycling, mountaineering, writing, tennis, traveling, film & cooking. I love challenges and in the summer of 2016, I hiked 892km (660 miles) along the 'Camino de Santiago de Compostella' in Spain. In December 2016 I went to South America & hiked much of the Andes in Patagonia, Argentina alone. I also work often in Nashville and New York.

After graduating from Edinburgh University, I worked in a media agency for ten years across such clients as Apple, Virgin and Estee Lauder. In 2008 I decided to take a career break which lead me to teaching. I've enjoyed it so much I never looked back!

Four years ago, I started working with the Pronunciation Studio who trained me in phonemics and accent reduction. Since then I have worked with business clients in blue chip companies to help them communicate more clearly and confidently to their clients and colleagues.

IELTS preparation is a speciality of mine. Also, what used to be the standard requirement of around 6.5 has crept up over the last few years to 7 or even 7.5 as the top universities increasingly demand excellence from their applicants. Preparation is absolutely vital and I have achieved excellent results from those prepared to work hard.

In my spare time I am a stand-up comedian and have performed all over the UK, including the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

I am an experienced and passionate teacher whose practice is informed by my work as both a Lecturer and a Tutor at university level (with the University of Nottingham, the University of London and the University of Hertfordshire), as well as by my work in academic philosophy. Having taught throughout my doctoral studies both within my core academic expertise and in other areas, I am highly adaptable in my approach and have a keen understanding of the skills required for any student to write well, especially to meet the demands of higher education. Having studied at both the University of London and the University of Cambridge I also have an intimate understanding of the expectations and characters of different academic institutions.

I have published academic work in Philosophy as well as more publicly accessible work in the subject (for instance, writing for *The Philosophers' Magazine*), and I have also published several pieces of fiction. This has helped to build my strong understanding of the qualities required for clear and effective writing, which I integrate with all of my teaching. I have taught students online both one-to-one and in group settings, from secondary school to undergraduate level.

I am also experienced in teaching at pre-university level, having tutored A-Level and GCSE students in Philosophy, Religious Studies, English and Mathematics. I recently started working with a charity offering tutoring catered to students having to re-take GCSE English or Mathematics, which has given me valuable insight into some of the obstacles students can face when trying to study these subjects.

I am a firm believer of the Socrates approach (asking questions to tease out answers in a very friendly and interactive way). While this requires a greater initial investment, it ultimately leads to a deeper appreciation for the subject matter and helps build confidence and improve grades.

I am currently a doctoral researcher at the LSE's Department of International Relations (IR) - one of the world's leading universities for this subject. As part of my PhD, I have also been awarded ESRC funding, which is highly prestigious (only two awards are made by the department each year). While my specialism is in the politics and IR of East Asia, my broad training and experience mean that I have expertise in a range of IR and political theory, as well as regional expertise in the UK, Europe, US etc.

Previously I obtained a first-class undergraduate degree from Cambridge (Trinity College), and distinction-grade master's degrees from SOAS, University of London and the LSE. My writing has been published in both academic and journalistic sources.

Between my undergraduate and master's degree, I trained as a lawyer and worked for three years at the top international firm Slaughter and May. Ultimately, however, I decided that a career in commercial law was not for me, and returned to university to pursue a career in academia and teaching.

I have been tutoring for several years, and feel that my profession supports my tutoring in many ways - I am constantly being exposed to new writing and all forms of literature and this aids me in encouraging my English Literature tutees to read widely and expansively, and I have a significant knowledge both from my BA and MA from which I can recommend reading to my students. I know that reading is invaluable and always encourage my students to be curious and explorative in their reading habits. Furthermore, as an actor I practice empathy every day and find this is a crucial skill to bring when tutoring. I am solution-based when it comes to learning and believe that practice makes perfect. I am patient and believe that if someone is struggling to grasp a concept or idea, there is always a way to solve the problem that suits the person best.

I have experience in academia (lecturer) and in industry (oil and gas rigs) and I have given lectures internationally, winning numerous awards for communication. Although I have a lot of experience, I have not lost sight of the challenges that face students as they use my tutorials to learn and develop their own knowledge base.

Originally from Wirral, I developed a keen interest in Natural Science from an early age. I have always been passionate about science and I sympathise with students who learn best on a one-to-one basis because I was once in the same boat. I also understand how different students prefer specific learning styles and I work hard to incorporate these qualities into my tutorials.

I know the importance of tailoring every session to match each student's specific objectives, whether it be grade-driven, university exam preparation, general foundation or out of interest. Through my online tutorials, we will push the boundaries of online learning, through practical lessons, web-based field courses and other innovative activities. I also run more traditional, taught learning style lecture courses. Each are optional and tailored to the individual's preferences. I can help with anything from GCSEs to A-levels to undergraduate and post-graduate degrees. I have personally been through each stage myself and I know each grading system well.

Together, we can meet our goals and succeed.

Archaeology, which I studied for my first degree, remains a passion of mine. As my academic career has progressed, I have moved slightly away from it in recent years but it remains an area of study which I still value a lot and try to engage with on a volunteer basis as regularly as possible. The shift I have experienced myself, changing from a science based degree to a far more humanities orientated degree, has really helped me to gain an insight into the scale of change many students can feel moving from GCSE to A-level and then to university and this has been reflected in my approach to tutoring. I always try to show my students that learning should be fun and not as daunting or intimidating as it may first seem. My greatest passion is teaching and I have always loved helping students find their own way around new concepts and also for me to learn from them, which is something with makes one-to-one teaching so fun.

Outside of education my other passions lie in the fields of art and computers. I combine these two interests in my own digital art which is something is really really enjoy. I believe that it is vial for people, no matter what stage of their life they are at, to remain in touch with the things they love and are passionate about, beyond their own schooling or career.

I qualified as a dentist a long time ago.

I began my love affair with teaching while doing a spell as a charity worker in a developing country, beginning in 1985. I enjoyed it so much that, once back in the UK, I took up a post teaching dental therapist and dental hygienists in Cardiff, where I remained for 20 years, retiring in 2017

During those 20 years, my love of teaching led me to undertake a masters degree and a doctorate in education, so I could learn a bit about the processes of teaching and learning. I made use of this knowledge and also gave back to the dental community by spending a few years as the external examiner on a PGCert programme for clinicians (Doctors, Dentists, Nurses etc) who wanted to further their own knowledge of teaching and learning. I also contributed by spending 6 years as an inspector for the General Dental Council, helping to ensure that dental therapy and hygiene programmes around the UK were of a high standard.

One of the privileges of being a teacher is to watch students develop their knowledge and skills and I have enjoyed observing and contributing to that development throughout my career. I keep in touch with a number of my ex-students via facebook, and am very proud to see how many of them have gone on to fulfilling careers. In fact, several of them are now teaching on the Cardiff dental hygiene and therapy programmes themselves.

Once I retired in 2017, I found that I missed teaching, and so joined the Profs to offer my expertise in teaching, dentistry and biological sciences. I offer private tuition in A level biology, help undergraduate students with writing skills for final year dissertations and provide writing support for the occasional student undertaking a masters degree.

I fell into tutoring when offered some part-time tuition work, during my study of Linguistics and Spanish at St Catherine's College, Oxford. Roughly eight years later, tutoring has become my full-time profession, still with a focus on those two subjects, as well as university entrance to Oxbridge and Russell Group universities for a range of subjects. I am lucky to teach language and linguistics - two subjects which dovetail each other and continually provide new avenues for exploration. I have helped students improve their language grades at all levels, and achieve university offers from Oxbridge, Edinburgh, Bristol, and others. I take an informal but rigorous approach to tutoring, taking advantage of the personal, non-classroom relationship that tuition allows. I have a special (but rarely indulged!) interest in Old Norse and modern Icelandic.

I was born and grew up in sunny Croatia. In high school, I successfully participated in many science competitions, winning two bronze medals, one at the International Astronomy Olympiad in Hangzhou, China (2009) and one at the International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics in Katowice, Poland (2011).

In 2012, I received a full scholarship and an additional bursary for living costs to study Natural Sciences at Trinity College, University of Cambridge. I finished my Bachelor's and Master's with First Class Honours and proceeded to do my PhD at ETH Zurich, Switzerland in the area of magnetism and electron microscopy.

I am easygoing, talkative and friendly. In my spare time, I like hiking, swimming, cycling, learning new languages (finally able to speak German!) and spending time in nature. I am a huge fan of animals, and I would be very happy to meet your pets online.
