What is the difference between GCSE Maths and GCSE Maths Numeracy?

It is important before taking your GCSEs that you understand the difference between Maths and GCSE Maths Numeracy as you will use both in very different ways.

GCSE Maths is the umbrella that extends to the aspects of Mathematics that you will need if you wish to progress to A level and beyond, specifically, if you are considering scientific, or technical studies.

GCSE Maths Numeracy is the bread and butter of Mathematics: the essentials that you will use in your day-to-day life, and is the element in which employers are most interested.

Why is numeracy considered to be so important?

The government takes numeracy so seriously, that there are nationally applied standards for adults that need to be met. For example:

Level One

The ability to calculate percentages and convert units of measure. Without these numeracy skills, adults may struggle to understand their payslips, etc.

Level Two

The ability to understand a range of mathematical information used for different purposes, in addition to the ability to compare information from a range of graphic, written and numerical forms. Adults who struggle with this, may, for example, be unable to effectively compare the costs of products or services or work out a basic household budget.

What are the entry requirements for GCSE Maths Numeracy?

Before taking your GCSEs, you will be assessed and have conversations with various member of the academic staff at school. They will take into consideration a range of factors (including ability) before recommending that you enter at one of the following levels.

• Foundation level (available grades D to G)
• Intermediate level (available grades B to E)
• Higher level (available grades A* to C)

It is important that you study at the level to which you are most suited to maximise your chances of enjoying the mandatory GCSE and also attaining the best possible grades.

Will there be any overlap between levels?

It is not practical to set totally different questions for each level, so yes, there will be a degree of overlap in terms of available grades (B and C are both possible at intermediate and higher level) and, as such, some of the questions will be identical.

It’s never too early to start planning your future. In fact, while not everyone will know exactly what they want to do when they finish their studies, it does help to have a clear sense of direction. Will there be a benefit to my day-to-day life?

Yes, there is undoubtedly a benefit to being numerate. GCSE Maths Numeracy will help you to do the following:

• Budget effectively and plan financially
• When shopping and paying bills
• At work (even entry-level jobs often require a certain degree of numerical ability)
• When out with friends/socialising (splitting bills etc.)

Most importantly being good at maths will give you a confidence boost and enable you to navigate life’s challenges with greater ease.
