If you’re considering tutoring for the first time, it’s natural to wonder what the process actually looks like. Do you choose a tutor yourself? How do you know who is right for you? How many lessons might you need? And what happens after the first call?
At The Profs, we make that process as straightforward and seamless as possible. Rather than asking students and parents to search through hundreds of profiles, we start by getting to know you before finding an Online Tutor whose expertise, experience and approach suit your goals.
Here’s what you can expect.

1. Book a Free Consultation
The first step is simply getting in touch.
When you contact The Profs, we’ll ask a little about what you’re looking for, including your level of study, subject, current position and goals. That could be GCSE Mathematics, A-Level revision, undergraduate education, postgraduate education or something more specific, such as preparation for university entrance exams.
From there, you’ll have a free consultation with a member of our team.
This is a chance for us to get to know you properly. Perhaps you already have a very clear goal: you want to move up a grade, prepare for an upcoming exam or apply to one of the UK’s top universities. Or perhaps you simply know that you could do with some additional support but aren’t yet sure what that should look like.
We can talk through your goals, any deadlines ahead, what is currently going well and where you feel you could use some help. If you have recent grades, predicted grades or academic feedback to hand, these can also give us useful context.
You don’t need to arrive with all the answers. The consultation is there to help us work that out together.
2. We Shortlist Expert Tutors
Once we understand what you’re looking for, we start finding tutors who match your needs.
The Profs uses a Smart-Match algorithm that draws on more than 10 million data points to recommend a shortlist for every family, which our client success team sifts through carefully before recommending best-suited tutors to prospective students.
We consider the goals and the subject you’ve discussed with us, alongside:
- The tutor’s qualifications and experience;
- The tutor’s track record of success;
- Your learning style.
We pride ourselves on having a highly experienced network of tutors to choose from. Among The Profs tutors, a remarkable 98% are postgraduates, 41% hold PhDs, and 70% have more than 10 years of experience.
But the aim isn’t simply to find an experienced tutor who can teach the subject, but to find someone we think will work well with you.
For a student preparing for an exam, for example, that could mean being introduced to a former examiner who understands exactly where marks are won and lost. For someone struggling with a difficult university topic, a lecturer or professor with specialist knowledge may be a better fit.
3. Match with Your Perfect Tutor
Once we’ve identified the tutors we think would be the best fit, we’ll arrange a second consultation to talk you through your shortlist.
During this call, we’ll walk you through each tutor’s profile, explain why we think they’re a good match and give you the opportunity to compare their qualifications, subject expertise, tutoring experience and teaching approach. You can ask as many questions as you need before deciding who you’d like to work with.
Once you’ve chosen your tutor, there is a one-time £70 placement fee. This covers the matching process and gives you lifetime access to our tutor network, so if you need support with another subject, qualification or academic goal in the future, you can come back to us without paying another placement fee.
The final choice of tutor is always yours. Once you’re happy with your match, we’ll make the introduction so you can arrange your first session and get started.
4. Have Lessons in Our Virtual Classroom
Once you’ve chosen your tutor, it’s time to get started. Your first session will take place in our interactive virtual classroom, where you and your tutor can work together using tools such as collaborative whiteboards, live chat, file sharing and real-time annotations.
Your tutor will typically use the first few tutoring sessions to understand your current level in more detail. This may include a diagnostic assessment to identify gaps in knowledge, areas of confidence and the topics that need the most attention.
From there, tutors personalise a targeted tutoring programme around the needs of every student, rather than following a generic course. This gives you and your tutor a clear plan for what to work on and where your time will have the greatest impact.
As you progress, your tutor can continue adapting the pace and focus of your lessons based on what you need most.
5. Review Tutoring Sessions at Your Leisure
Your tutoring sessions don’t disappear once the lesson ends. Every session is recorded, giving you a permanent revision resource that you can return to throughout your studies.
Whether you want to revisit a difficult explanation, refresh your knowledge before an exam, or go back over a topic months later, your lessons remain there whenever you need them.
Your tutor can also share additional revision materials, practice questions, reading and feedback, helping you build a bank of personalised learning resources alongside your recorded sessions.
6. Achieve Outstanding Academic Success
Naturally, one of the biggest questions students and parents have is whether tutoring actually makes a difference.
Our 2025 results, based on respondents to our client feedback survey, give you a useful picture of the progress students made while working with The Profs:
- 92% of students across all levels of study improved their grades, with an average of just 22 hours of tutoring.
- 92% of A-Level students achieved a grade improvement, with an average of just 22 hours of tutoring.
- 93% of undergraduate students achieved a grade improvement, with an average of just 21 hours of tutoring.
- 99% of our admissions students got into their first or second-choice university, while 2 in 3 offers came from a top 10 UK university.
- 70% of our Oxbridge admissions students secured offers (4x the national average).
These figures are useful benchmarks rather than promises about what any individual student will achieve. Everyone starts from a different place, and the amount of support needed will depend on your goals, timeframe and circumstances.

What subjects and qualifications does The Profs cover?
The Profs provides private tuition across hundreds of subjects and a wide range of academic levels and qualifications, from GCSE and A-Level through to undergraduate and postgraduate study.
Our network includes specialists in traditional school subjects as well as highly specific university modules and disciplines. So, if you need support in an area that is difficult to find a tutor for elsewhere, it is still worth getting in touch with our tutoring team.
Can parents be involved in their child’s tutoring?
Absolutely. For younger students, we understand that students and parents may both want visibility over how tutoring is progressing.
Your child can build an independent relationship with their tutor, while parents can remain informed about progress, priorities and areas that may need further attention. This can be particularly useful when tutoring sits alongside support from a school teacher.
Does The Profs only work with students who are struggling?
Not at all. Students come to us for very different reasons. Some want to close gaps in their knowledge, while others are already performing well and want to push towards a higher grade, prepare for a competitive course or develop their confidence and motivation.
Our tutors help students at different starting points, whether the aim is to catch up, get ahead or reach their full potential.
