1. Rigorous Interviews
Shortlisted tutors are interviewed by The Profs’ Tutor Community team, a group of experienced individuals who know what great tutoring looks like in practice.
These conversations are thoughtful and wide-ranging. Tutors undergo scrutiny of their academic background, qualifications, tutoring experience, availability, and track record of achieving results for students. Because this stage is led directly by our team, we get to know our tutors personally; there is no automated approval process and no anonymous onboarding.
2. Live Tutoring Simulations
A defining part of the interview is the live teaching simulation. Tutors are asked to teach a short session as though they were working with a real student, while the Tutor Community team observes.
This allows the team to see how tutors communicate in real time, how clearly they explain ideas, and how they respond to questions or uncertainty.
This stage is often where weaker academic candidates are filtered out.
Why? Being knowledgeable about a subject is important, but being able to teach with clarity and care is essential. The Profs place a strong emphasis on empathy and emotional intelligence. Many students come to tutoring feeling under pressure, lacking confidence, or unsure of their ability. Tutors need to recognise this and respond in a way that builds trust as well as understanding.
3. Enhanced DBS and Background Checks
Once a tutor has passed the interview stage, we carry out full background checks before they are approved to work with students. Academic qualifications are carefully verified, and all tutors must pass an enhanced DBS check, or the international equivalent where applicable.
Tutors are also required to complete full KYC verification. KYC stands for “Know Your Customer” and is an identity-verification process used to confirm that a tutor is who they say they are. This includes validating official identification documents and verifying key personal details.
These checks are never treated as a formality. They are a fundamental part of our safeguarding standards and help ensure that students are supported by tutors who are not only highly qualified, but also trusted professionals to work with from the very start.
4. A Highly Experienced Tutor Network
Because of our thorough approach, The Profs’ tutor network reflects an exceptional level of experience:
- 98% hold postgraduate qualifications.
- 41% hold PhDs.
- 70% have 10 or more years of tutoring experience.
