How to Get Into the INSEAD MBA

Consistently ranked the #1 MBA in the world, INSEAD attracts thousands of high-achieving applicants every year, but only a small fraction get in.

Interestingly, INSEAD doesn’t publish official acceptance rates. Reports vary from as high as 33% to as low as 5%, making it hard to know where you stand. For most, the process feels like a high-stakes gamble.

But for our clients, it’s a different story. With expert support from our Postgrad Admissions Tutors, 96% of applicants we work with receive offers from INSEAD – that’s more than triple the estimated average.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through exactly what INSEAD looks for, with exclusive advice from our founder Richard Evans, who has over a decade of experience helping professionals turn competitive MBA applications into career-defining offers.

Why INSEAD is the #1 MBA in the World

INSEAD has a global reputation for producing leaders who don’t just succeed in business, but transform it.

Here’s why it stands apart:

  • Truly international: No other MBA matches INSEAD’s diversity of nationalities, languages, and professional backgrounds.
  • Fast-track format: A one-year programme that condenses the impact of a two-year MBA, perfect for ambitious professionals.
  • Global network: Alumni working in top positions across every continent; one of the strongest MBA networks worldwide.
  • Employer appeal: INSEAD graduates are prized for their ability to operate across cultures, industries, and borders.

INSEAD is also one of the most demanding MBAs in the world:

  1. GMAT: Average score of 710 (among the highest globally).
  2. Experience: Expectation of 6+ years’ professional experience, with many candidates having 10+.
  3. Languages: Proof of a second language is mandatory.

From boosting your GMAT score to showcasing your international experience, The Profs can help you meet every element of INSEAD’s high bar. Work with our expert GMAT Tutors, Language Tutors, and MBA Tutors to craft a standout application.

5 Key Tips to Secure Your Place:

Tip 1: Build a Robust Career Plan

At INSEAD, your career plan isn’t just an application detail. It’s the backbone of your story.

The admissions team wants to see that you know exactly where this MBA will take you and that your plan is both ambitious and realistic.

 What this means in practice:

  • Immediate post-MBA role: Be specific. What company and what position will you target straight after graduating? Will they hire MBAs? (INSEAD will check.)
  • 2–3 years post-MBA: How will you build on that first role? What responsibilities will you take on?
  • 5 years post-MBA: What leadership or strategic position will you hold? How will your MBA accelerate you into it?

Vague aspirations won’t cut it. You must be:

  •  Naming the specific company you want to work for after your MBA (e.g. McKinsey, Goldman Sachs, Amazon).
  • Identifying the exact role or title you are aiming for (e.g. Strategy Consultant in MENA,’ ‘ESG Project Manager at a global bank’).
  • Explaining why that role recruits MBAs and how INSEAD in particular prepares you for it.

Example: Instead of saying ‘I want to be a leader in finance,’ you could write:

Immediately after my MBA, I intend to join JP Morgan’s Investment Banking division in Singapore as an Associate, focusing on cross-border M&A. JP Morgan recruits heavily from INSEAD, and I have already connected with alumni in this space. Within 3 years, I aim to progress to Vice President, leading deals across Asia-Pacific. By year 5, I plan to take on a Director role, spearheading ESG-focused investment strategies and leveraging INSEAD’s global alumni network to connect corporate clients with sustainable finance opportunities.

This type of structured, detailed career plan proves that you know exactly how INSEAD will accelerate your trajectory into senior finance leadership and that you’ve already begun laying the groundwork.

Tip 2: Align Your Application with INSEAD’s Electives, Faculty, and Societies

At INSEAD, it’s not enough to say you have a career plan – you need to prove that your goals connect directly with what INSEAD offers.

This is where most candidates go wrong. They keep things vague, and as a result, their application feels generic.

Instead, admissions tutors want to see that you’ve researched INSEAD in depth:

  • Electives: INSEAD is famous for its wide range of electives. Don’t just say you’re “interested in strategy.”
  • Instead, name specific modules that will give you the tools you need for your next role. For example, if you want to transition into ESG leadership at a bank, point to sustainability-focused electives.
  • Societies: Which student clubs or societies will you join? Will you add value to them? Showing engagement outside the classroom proves you’ll immerse yourself fully in INSEAD’s culture.
  • Professors: Name the academics whose work aligns with your goals. Better yet, reference a paper or lecture they’ve given, and how you’d like to build on those ideas.
  • Conversations: Go further still and explain what you’d want to discuss with them over coffee. That level of specificity shows you’re serious about learning from INSEAD’s thought leaders.

When your career plan is this detailed, it reassures admissions tutors that you’ll not only succeed in the course but also leverage INSEAD’s unique resources to excel after graduation.

The Profs’ University Admissions Tutors can help you tailor your application to electives, professors, and societies that match your goals.

Tip 3: Meet INSEAD’s Second Language Requirement

One of the most distinctive (and sometimes overlooked) entry requirements for INSEAD is its second language requirement.

Even though INSEAD is a French business school, the MBA is taught in English. If English is your first language, you must prove fluency in a second language at a practical, near-business level. This is not optional. Without it, you cannot graduate from the programme.

 Why this matters:

  • Proof required: INSEAD will ask you to demonstrate evidence of your second language ability, so you can’t simply claim conversational knowledge.
  • Anglosphere candidates struggle: Applicants from the UK, US, Canada, and other English-dominant countries are most at risk here. Many highly qualified candidates fail because they underestimate this requirement.
  • It’s a filter: INSEAD knows that business today is global. Showing you can operate in more than one language signals adaptability, cultural intelligence, and global readiness.

Options include:

  1. Taking accredited courses (e.g., CEFR or DELE qualifications).
  2. Demonstrating professional use of a second language in past roles.
  3. Leveraging bilingual heritage or family background, but with evidence.

Language is a filter that trips up many otherwise strong candidates. The Profs’ Language Tutors can help you demonstrate fluency and enhance your communication skills, so you don’t lose out on a place.

Tip 4: Prove Rapid Career Progression and High Potential

One of the biggest things INSEAD looks for is evidence that you’re not just a strong professional, but a superstar in the making.

 Ask yourself:

  • What have I achieved in less time than expected?
  • If a promotion normally takes three years, did you achieve it in one?
  • If it usually takes five years to reach a management role, did you do it in two?
  • Have you consistently been placed on ‘fast-track’ schemes or accelerated leadership programmes?

This is what INSEAD admissions tutors want to see. It’s proof that you’re ahead of the curve. But progression isn’t just about job titles. INSEAD values candidates who have shown leadership skills, even without formal authority. That could be:

  • Leading people directly as a manager.
  • Project leadership, where you coordinated teams and drove outcomes.
  • Making your team ‘win the pitch’ by being the driving force behind strategy or execution.

Not sure how to position your achievements? Our Admissions Tutors can help you frame your story in a way that highlights your potential.

Tip 5: Be Presidential: Show Values, Leadership, and Extracurricular Impact

INSEAD wants leaders who act, and think – like presidents. This goes beyond career plans: they want to see your values, vision, and ability to inspire others.

What to include:

  • Clear values: what principles guide your leadership?
  • Leadership narrative: times you led teams, initiatives, or change.
  • Family & community: INSEAD values well-rounded leaders. Mention the family, community, or personal values that shape your decisions.
  • Extracurriculars: highlight achievements outside work. Have you published research? Spoken at events? Or won professional awards?
  • Taken extra courses (e.g. Coursera or EdX) to prove your intellectual curiosity and commitment to growth?

Leadership at INSEAD goes beyond job titles. Our dedicated Postgrad Admissions Tutors provide guidance that helps you showcase your values, extracurricular impact, and readiness to lead.
