If you’ve applied through UCAS, used all five of your original choices, and don’t currently hold any offers, UCAS Extra gives you another opportunity to apply for a place at university or college without waiting for Clearing.

When does UCAS Extra open for 2026 – 2027 cycle?
For 2027 entry, UCAS Extra opens on 26 February 2026.
From 26 February, eligible students will be able to use UCAS Extra to apply for another course. The service remains open until 1 July 2026, with Clearing opening on 2 July 2026.
Key UCAS Extra dates for 2026:

- Final deadline to use UCAS Extra: 1 July 2026.
- Clearing opens: 2 July 2026.
- Courses start: September 2026 (typically).
Once Clearing opens, you will no longer be able to use UCAS Extra.
Who can use UCAS Extra?
You’ll be able to use UCAS Extra if:
- You’ve used all five choices on your UCAS application.
- You don’t hold any offers (you’ve received none, or declined them).
- Your application is still active.
You won’t be able to apply through UCAS Extra if you are currently holding an offer. In that case, you would need to accept or decline that offer before becoming eligible.
How does UCAS Extra work?
UCAS Extra works differently from your original application. Instead of choosing multiple courses, you apply one at a time, giving you more control over each decision.
Here’s how the process works:
1. Find a course you would like to apply for.
- Use the ‘Show courses with vacancies’ filter in the UCAS search tool to narrow your options.
- Contact the university or college to check entry requirements and confirm they will consider you through UCAS Extra.
2. Add the course as your Extra choice in your UCAS application.
- Add the details to your application.
3. Wait for a decision from the university or college. If you have not received a response after 21 days, you can choose to continue waiting or add a different Extra choice.
- If you receive an offer and accept it, your place is confirmed, subject to meeting the entry requirements.
- If you receive an offer but decide it is not right for you, you can decline it.
- If you are not offered a place, you’ll be able to apply for another course through Extra.
Can you apply for a different subject using UCAS Extra?
Yes. UCAS Extra is often used by students who’ve changed their mind about what they want to study.
You can:
- Apply for a different subject.
- Apply to a different university.
- Switch from a competitive course to one with more flexibility.
That said, if you’re applying for a very different subject, it’s sensible to contact the university first and check whether you need to change your personal statement or tailor it to meet their expectations.
UCAS Extra vs Clearing: what’s the difference?
UCAS Extra and Clearing are both routes to university, but they serve different points in the admissions cycle.
- UCAS Extra runs from February to early July and allows you to apply calmly, one course at a time.
- Clearing opens later in the year and is often faster-paced, with places changing quickly.
If you’re eligible, Extra can be a more measured way to apply for a university place before Clearing begins.

Is there a fee for UCAS Extra?
No. UCAS Extra is a free service. There is no additional charge to use it once you’ve submitted your original UCAS application.
Do you need a new personal statement for UCAS Extra?
You cannot change your personal statement, so if you are applying for a different course from your original choices, it is worth contacting the university or college directly. Let them know you have changed your mind and ask whether you can send a revised personal statement.
Can you apply to more than one course through UCAS Extra?
You can apply for one course at a time. If you’re declined or decide not to accept an offer, you can then apply for another course, provided Extra is still open.
What happens if you receive an offer through UCAS Extra?
If you receive an offer through UCAS Extra, you can choose to accept or decline it. Once accepted, your place is secured and you exit the Extra process.
