I believe my engaging, committed and holistic approach to Teaching and Learning, Research and Supervision has greatly enhanced previous student experiences and will continue to do so. My philosophical approach as an academic is not to merely 'convey knowledge' but rather to challenge students to fulfil their academic potential, identifying and bringing their strengths to the fore. Over the last 20 years I have supervised >130 undergraduate dissertations (average 68%), ~50 MSc dissertations (with numerous distinctions), and the lead supervisor for twelve PhD students. Many of these students have received Awards for their dissertations.

Overview of most recent PhD student (2017).

Dr Scott Taylor: PhD Environmental Biogeochemistry: “Exploring Factors Driving Organic Carbon Burial and Storage in Small Constructed Ponds: An Experimental Approach”. University of Northumbria, UK. Passed NO corrections. External Examiner described thesis and viva defence as exceptional. Research published in Frontiers of Ecology and the Environment (2019), with award from Wiley Press. PhD acknowledgement, “My sincere thanks and gratitude must firstly go Dr David Cooke. From my days as an undergraduate, where his enthusiasm and passion for environmental science cemented my interest in this field, right through my postgraduate studies, where he provided monumental amounts of support, guidance and motivation. Massive thanks for giving me the opportunity to achieve this award”.

Email from most recent A level students father (August 23, grade A achieved):

"This is a great result, all the more so given the very short run up by completing a two-year course in, essentially, two and a bit academic terms, and whilst holding down a full-time. The outcome is a tribute not only to his endeavour and application but also to your guidance and mentoring, which fostered his ability to achieve an A. Both he and we are very grateful for your knowledge, enthusiasm and practical advice in helping. He has potential to be a first class Environmental Science student, and in this regard you will always be a foundation stone. Very best wishes"
