Depending on your course level, your degree apprenticeship will take 3-6 years to complete.

The majority of your schedule will be dedicated to your professional duties, supplemented by part-time university studies. This might involve attending university for one or two days each week, or concentrated periods such as week-long sessions. Generally, your time is divided into approximately 20% for studying and 80% for work-related activities.

4 Bs at Scottish Higher level (or equivalent).

One subject should be Maths or Computer Science or Physics.

Candidates should have a National 5 Grade B in Maths and English (or equivalent).  

Those with lower grades due to extenuating circumstances have the opportunity to highlight this within their application.

BSc (Hons) in Software Engineering.Four years.
Finance and Business Management Apprenticeship3 predicted or achieved A levels at grades A, B and B (or IB equivalent or 128 UCAS Points).

GCSEs: 5 at grade 6 (B), which includes Mathematics and a minimum of grade 4 (C) in English Language.

AAT (Level 4 Apprenticeship) qualification. 

After completing the programme, high-performing Apprentices will have the opportunity to join the Global Finance and Business Management Graduate Programme. 

The Graduate Programme provides an opportunity to undertake 3 one-year rotations whilst completing their CIMA qualification.

Two years.

You’ll notice that three of these are “degree apprenticeships” as they offer degree-level qualifications upon completion, whilst one does not. You should also note that two programmes offer Level 4 qualifications. We will break down what this means below!

Level 4 apprenticeships offered at JP Morgan

The Finance and Business Management Apprenticeship offers a Level 4 apprenticeship qualification instead of a BSc degree, whilst the Financial Services Apprenticeship offers it on top of one. 

During a Level 4 apprenticeship qualification, you will learn practical skills specific to one industry and managerial skills. Academic modules will be taught in a higher or further education institution whilst the rest of the time is spent working for a company. 

The Level 4 apprenticeship qualification is equivalent to a foundation degree, Higher National Diploma (HND) or Higher National Certificate (HNC).

Requirements for a degree apprenticeship at JP Morgan

Required A levels or equivalent academic qualifications

As detailed in the table above, JP Morgan’s apprenticeship entry requirements are largely three Bs at A level (or the IB, UCAS, Scottish Highers or another equivalent to this), bar one programme requiring an A.

Depending on the subject, programmes might stipulate that candidates have their A level grades (or equivalent) in one Maths, Science or Computer Science subject. Generally, a background in Maths and/or STEM is ideal.

All the apprenticeships specify that candidates should have 4-5 in GCSE English and 5-6 in GCSE Maths.

Insider tip: Exceed JP Morgan’s grade requirements! Yes, they’ve been lowered to avoid dismissing students who have great potential yet are not top performers in academia. However, it’s still a very competitive race and having top grades will increase your chances of success.

2. The application form

You’ll need to provide your basic personal information and work experience, CV, and 500-word cover letter, and answer several questions that differ based on the division you are applying to.

The questions may include:

  • Why you want to work at JPMorgan and your chosen division
  • How your background prepared you for the role
  • Your financial experience or examples demonstrating leadership and quantitative skills
  • Your knowledge of the financial services industry
  • Your strengths and weaknesses
  • Your 10-year career vision
  • Preferred work location and reasons
  • Challenges you’ve faced and how you handled them

Insider tip: Sometimes attaching a cover letter is optional but this is a great opportunity to show stand out so write one! In addition to your CV, your cover letter you can really show who you are as a person. An ex-recruiter for JP Morgan said they want hard workers who know what they are getting themselves into, as the industry requires long hours and hard work. So, show that you’re aware of this and equipped for this in your cover letter. 3. Online numerical test

Most applications include a numerical test of sorts. 

​​There are a variety of JP Morgan tests being used. These may include:

  • Situational Judgement Tests (SJTs)
  • Numerical Reasoning Tests
  • Online Coding Assessments

While no maths skills beyond GCSE are required, having a technical degree is advantageous. 

The numerical test consists of 12 games on the Pymetrics platform and lasts 20-30 minutes.

The test is under significant time pressure, so you must work swiftly and accurately. It is crucial to manage your time well and move on once the allocated time for a question has passed.

During the test, you will need to:

  • Perform basic calculations
  • Interpret information from tables, charts, and graphs
  • Use percentages
  • Use ratios
  • Use fractions
  • Apply logical thinking
  • Perform calculations and reasoning with time and dates

4. Interview

There is usually a telephone interview and a HireVue video interview.

The telephone interview:

This is usually a phone call by someone from one of JP Morgan’s partner universities, such as the University of Exeter, or HR from the university Assessment Centre. Think of this as a screening call. Usually, the interviewer asks simple questions. However, they might also throw in one or two maths questions.

The HireVue interview:

Before being invited to the assessment centre, successful candidates must complete a Hirevue interview. This interview uses an algorithm to assess traits such as blinking, body language, and your responses, comparing them to those of high-performing individuals at JPMorgan.

The Hirevue interview consists of 5 to 7 questions (including competency, motivational, technical or commercial awareness), with around three minutes allotted for each response and 30 seconds for preparation. Note that there is no option to pause or re-record. Depending on the service line you applied for, you might encounter a mix of competency, motivational, technical, or commercial awareness questions.

To excel in your interview, you must demonstrate thorough knowledge of JPMorgan. Prepare by attending on-campus presentations, engaging with JPMorgan staff, and studying the JPMorgan website, programmes, and culture.

Most JPMorgan interviews are competency-based. Be ready to discuss previous job experiences, problem-solving scenarios, leadership roles, and current business issues. JPMorgan recommends using the Problem-Actions-Results (PAR) technique to showcase your problem-solving skills:

  1. Problem: Describe a challenge you faced at work or university.
  2. Actions: Explain the steps you took to address it.
  3. Results: Highlight the positive outcomes of your actions.

You will also have the opportunity to ask questions during the interview. Make sure to have a few thoughtful questions prepared to show your genuine interest and engagement. By following these guidelines and thoroughly preparing, you can increase your chances of success in the Hirevue interview and move forward in the selection process at JPMorgan.

Insider tip: 

There are several qualities and skills that JP Morgan wants to see from you within the application process. Think about answers to questions such as: Why JPM? What area of the bank are you interested in working in? What are your career plans? Why an apprenticeship? In addition, keep on top of current affairs and how they would impact a bank such as JPM. Also, explain times when you have shown the ability to work in teams. You want to show how your past experiences make you an outstanding candidate and mention any projects that you are proud of and why. What was the most challenging part of that project and how did you overcome it? 

Think about some questions to ask back to show that you’ve done your research and are engaged.

Remember, in the first round of interviews, your behaviour and character are most important as it’s not until further down the line that interviews become more technical. So, ensure that you are likeable and demonstrate good qualities. 

Practise with family and friends as much as you can, and especially rehearse the video interview.

5. Assessment Centre

Successful candidates are invited to attend a day at the assessment centre. The specific exercises and interviews will depend on the division and whether the role is an internship or a full-time position, as only some divisions recruit directly for full-time roles.

Here’s a breakdown of the possible exercises and interviews you might encounter, typically totalling around five:

  • Online verbal reasoning test: You might be sent preparation material by email before your assessment centre visit. These documents will provide information on a scenario likely to happen in your department.
  • Personality test: This will assess your traits and how well you fit with JP Morgan’s culture and values.
  • Paper-based retake of the numerical test: A chance to demonstrate your numerical and analytical skills in a controlled environment.
  • Problem-solving exercise: This is designed to test your data analysis and problem-solving skills.
  • Written exercise: You may be asked to draft a report or respond to a business scenario in writing.
  • Group exercise: The topic of this will likely be the same as the case study. Your group will have 35 minutes to discuss the topic and demonstrate teamwork.
  • Case study and presentation: You will analyse a business case and present your findings and recommendations.
  • Role-play exercise: Simulates a real-life business scenario to assess your interpersonal and problem-solving abilities.
  • Self-awareness interview: Focuses on your self-reflection, strengths, weaknesses, and personal development.
  • Up to three 30 or 45-minute competency-based interviews: These interviews will explore your skills, experiences, and how you’ve handled various situations.
  • Technical interviews: Assesses your technical knowledge and expertise relevant to the role.
  • Final round interview: This will be competency-based, depending on the division.

Prepare for a combination of these assessments to showcase your skills and fit for the role.

Insider tip: This assessment centre process is very competitive. You will be up against some very ambitious people, so it might be difficult to get a word in among all the other applicants. Remember to be confident and try to speak up as much as you can. However, don’t take the floor for the sake of it, speak with purpose, and remain mindful of others so you don’t make a bad impression.

Top tips for application success

Apply early

Within a few days of submitting your application, you will be invited to a phone interview if you’re shortlisted. However, it’s important to note that these phone interviews are on a first come first serve basis. So, it’s super important that you apply earlier than the deadline! 

The deadlines for degree apprenticeships at JP Morgan usually fall in early October. So, try to have your application ready before then. Research when applications open and try to be first!

Make a strong impression

JP Morgan posted on a LinkedIn article detailing what kind of apprentice candidates they’re looking for. They wrote: “Ideal candidates for the programme are creative and motivated team players with a positive attitude and strong interpersonal skills who are excited to pursue a career in the Financial Services sector including career changers/career movers.” 

In a YouTube video released by JP Morgan on Investment Banking apprenticeships, a JP Morgan representative states that all they’re looking for is individuals with “intellect, drive and a desire to succeed.”

Another important thing to remember is that you will not always be completing “important work” as you work your way up the food chain. At times, you will be doing grunt work or fetching coffee. So, it’s good to show that this isn’t against your nature. Try to show humility.

Present yourself as someone who possesses all the aforementioned attributes, both in your written application and in your interviews. Think of examples that prove these descriptions match your character and bank them so that you can find opportunities to talk about them (don’t simply wait to be asked specific questions!).

Once you know what apprenticeship you’re applying for, deep dive into all the information JP Morgan provides about it on their website. Also, go onto LinkedIn and search posts by figures and departments at JP Morgan relevant to your desired programme. Once you collect this information you can use it to shape your written application and your interview speaking ideas. Target people from your school or area on LinkedIn who have jobs at JP Morgan as they might be more likely to reply.
