Exam preparation techniques and strategies

Mastering Maths revision

Different universities offer different exam structures for Maths degrees. For instance, some Maths courses conduct all exams at the end of the year, whilst others conduct exams throughout e.g. after each module is completed.

If your Maths degree conducts all exams at the end of the year you will need to revise everything from all modules and refresh your knowledge of concepts you haven’t seen in months. So, to avoid that, try to keep revising each module throughout the year to avoid going through everything from the start when you begin exam preparation. If you really can’t do this, then start revision as early as possible to give yourself enough time for this undertaking!

If your Maths degree conducts exams throughout the year you will find that most things are fresh in your mind and you can simply revise per module.

Motivating yourself to revise can be half the battle. Try agreeing to meet a friend for breakfast at 8 AM with the plan to head to the library to revise after. This way, you won’t want to let your friend down, meaning you’ll get up and out of the house early and you can hold each other accountable to get to the library at 9 AM. 

A top tip from a Cambridge Maths graduate: “What really helped make my revision easier was creating a cheat sheet page per exam. Imagine you’re allowed one A4 paper into your exam and cram onto it everything you need and want to bring in. Just remember, it’s not about how much writing you can fit, so don’t make you’re writing smaller; it’s about how much you can summarise. The challenge is condensing a whole term’s worth of information into formulas and use cases on one A4 paper. Some of my friends liked using colour but I didn’t bother with that as the information was most important to me. Making your cheat sheet is more important than using it, but of course, I looked at it the night before my exam, the morning of, and the last moment before walking into the exam hall and handing my bag in. Oh, and if there’s a certain formula you need to remember, look at it right before you go in and then write it down as soon as you’re in the exam hall!”

Optimising exam performance with past papers

Practice is super important so make sure that you take lots of mock exams; the more the better so that you can learn how to approach different types of questions. 

Your university should have a wealth of past papers and questions. Cambridge has papers available for students dating back to the early 90s! You can also look at other universities. Many university past papers are available online without a login! The best way to revise content is to use it and figure out what you remember and what you forget – what topics are you getting stuck with? 

Also, trial timing. Ensure that you complete mock papers under timed conditions to improve speed and accuracy. You can also toy with different techniques for time e.g. some people prefer to work from the back of the paper and start with the hardest questions.

With practice exams, try to get into the habit of showing your work for every question. Plus, try conceptualising the answer before you write. Take a moment to think about the right strategy to solve a question before you start writing.

Analyse previous exams to understand common question formats and topics. You can use these, or mocks you’ve completed, to make detailed study notes.
